Baylor Engineering Professor Receives Volunteer of the Year Award

Dr. Robert Marks, Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Baylor University, has received the Volunteer of the Year award from the Dallas Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the largest professional society in the world. The award was given to Marks by the chair of the Dallas Section of the IEEE at an awards banquet earlier this month.

Marks received the award in part for his work establishing the Computational Intelligence Society of the Dallas Chapter of the IEEE, and served as the first chair of the society.

"A variation of a quote from the late comedian George Burns comes to mind 'I don't deserve this award,'" Marks said. "But I've also recently developed an allergic reaction to pollen and I don't deserve that either."

Marks received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Texas Tech University. He came to Baylor from the University of Washington, where he was professor of electrical engineering and was graduate program director from 1996 until 2000. He is a fellow of the Optical Society of America IEEE. He has been recognized as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and has received the IEEE Centennial Medal and Certificate.
