Curtis formed a production
company and made a few very low budget films, including The Killer
Shrews (1959) and The Giant Gila
Monster (1959). The horror films were made in Texas and intended to be
released as a drive-in double feature. The production costs were only
a little over $100,000 per film and the box office take was over a million.
