| 3. The Killer
May 26th 1956, Written by John Dunkel, Story by John Meston, Directed by Robert Stevenson Guest Cast: Charles Bronson |
Charles Bronson's character,
Crego, is the definitive characterization of a cold blooded vagrant serial
killer. Crego shoots a drifter because he talks to much. Crego likes to
pick fights with those he knows he can outdraw in a gun fight. He enjoys
killing.
Dillon knows this poisonous parasite must be exterminated. He sees, though, no legal remedy. All of the gun fights are "fair". A moral compromise is made by Dillon. He justifies a little wrong is an appropriate ingredient to destroy an immense evil - but risks his life so that the wrong he does is legally justified. Unknowingly, Chester and his loyalty to the Marshal are crucial ingredients in Dillon's plan. The intensity of Dillon's final confrontation with Crego dries the eyes. You're afraid to blink. Another genius story by John Meston. Charles Bronson (left panel) as sports-killer Crego in The Killer. The reality of the Gunsmoke sets and costumes - especially in early episodes - was remarkable. Check out Crego's pants. Probably sewn from a used flour sack. Click on the picture to see a gritty depiction of early Dillon. |
