Very little is known of this wonderful little character actress but her
memorable portrayals warrant her a high place on any list of great character
actors. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on January 2, 1893. A
diminutive, stocky, somewhat frumpy little lady with a sweet personality,
she was perfect for character roles. Her voice, which was quite warbly,
was one of her best assets. She was a fine foil to many a big star, including
Lucille Ball. I have been researching her career for years. Among her
films are: "Rear Window" (1954) as Miss Hearing Aid; "An Affair to Remember"
(1957) as the Landlady; "North by Northwest" (1959) in an unbilled role
as Woman Waiting for Bus; "The Music Man" (1962) as Avis Grubb; "4 for
Texas" (1963) as Mildred a Widow; "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" (1965) as
Mrs. Hutchinson; "Three on a Couch" (1966); "The Love God" (1969) as Miss
Love and "Angel in My Pocket" (1969) as Mrs. Styles, her last film. On
TV she appeared in the short-lived series "Many Happy Returns" (1964-65)
as Wilma Fritter and on "Our Miss Brooks" (1954-56) as Angela. She also
guested on such shows as: "The Monkees"; "Gunsmoke"; "Alfred Hitchcock
Presents"; "Perry Mason" and "The Man From U.N.C.L.E." She died on February
16, 1975 at age 82 in Hollywood, California of natural causes.
