How do I play old time radio (OTR) from TheaterOfTheEars.com?
Just keep clicking! For example, click on Suspense and choose one of the radio plays.  (Don't click on "Parent Directory" since this is not a radio play).  Click on the radio play and the default player on your computer should start playing. Make sure your speakers or headphones are turned on and the volume is turned up.  Or, if you'd like to save the show to listen to later or download to an iPod, right click and "Save as" however you like..

What player should I use on my computer?
We like Quick Time from Apple. The basic player is free and it nicely embeds the player right in the web page.  There are a few files that end in RA and RM. For these, you must use the basic Real Audio player.  It's also free.

Can I download the radio plays and listen to them on my iPod or MP3 player?
Yes. If they are MP3. Almost all of the audio on this site are MP3 files
.

Do you have any recommendations for first time listeners?
Many OTR shows age well.  For good old fashion story telling, it's hard to beat Suspense.  For comedy, Jack Benny is great. His regulars include Mel Blanc who voiced Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Barney Rubble, Yosemite Sam and a slew of other characters.  (Warning: There are cigarette commercials and some racial stereotyping characteristic of the period - but certainly not to the extent of Amos & Andy.
)  The raw old west is wonderfully portrayed in radio's Gunsmoke. Many of radio's Gunsmoke stories were later adapted for the television series.

Some of the radio plays have poor audio quality.  What's the deal?
The old time radio recordings we have today are made from old transcriptions and private collector recordings.  These were made before surround sound, stereo or even high fidelity.  There may be better recordings elsewhere, but these are the best we know of.

When I listen to the plays, the audio seems to go back and forth between my right ear and my left ear. What's the deal?
Either try reversing your earphones or your ears.
